Most of the time it is revolves around not having enough resources to meet the needs of the growing company or just to stay above water. Apart from getting funds through bank loans, your personal savings and venture or angel capital, there is an often overlooked resource that could be a windfall for the business if it becomes successful. This source of money and publicity is business contests. They are usually organized by bigger companies, universities or whoever, where small businesses and entrepreneurs are encouraged to submit a business plan to be considered in the contest to win cash of free service.

If you are like most people you will not even bother about it, maybe saying that you have never won anything before so there is no need in trying or write it off as one of those get rich quick scams. However, most of them are authentic, but it would be good idea to do a quick search online to learn more about the contest or the company offering it. There are a few strategies you can use to give your business a fighting chance in the competition and they include:-

o Read The Instructions
o Mail It In
o Be Well Prepared
o The Harder You Work The Luckier You Get

Read The Instructions
Form the habit of reading instructions or directions before you start anything. Even if it looks as simple as the toy that comes with a fast food happy meal, always read it first to know what you are supposed to do. With business contests they often have guide lines and qualification criteria, so make sure that you and your business qualify for the contest before committing time to doing the research and putting your plan together.

Mail It In
Many business owners will take the pains of putting together all the requirements for a competition. Do the research, come up with solid ideas way before the deadline and never mail it in. Most will say that they took a second look at it and did not think they would have a chance. This is like taking your hard earned money and purchasing a lottery ticket and never checking the numbers to see if you won. The mistake that business owners that take this approach make is that they do not realize that a quite a number of businesses take the same approach too and at the end of the day there will be only be a handful of contestants, making it easier in a way for the businesses that participated.

Be Well Prepared
Always put your best foot forward. Do a very thorough job when putting your application together. I have seen many on many occasions where competition was tight and the way the judges determined who won was by asking them to say more about what the next level would be for the business? Most of the contestants had not thought that far ahead when preparing their plan for the contest and the lone contestant that had an elaborate plan for the future got the price.

The Harder You Work The Luckier You Get
Participating in a contest will be good for you and your business. Even if you do not win the first prize, it gives your business some mention and exposure for at least having participated. Not only that, the more practice and exposure you have, the better you get and the more likely it is that you will one day win one of the competitions. Endeavor to participate with your business in a t least one competition every year and never give up. Remember, the harder you work, the luckier you get.
