In part 1 of the Tsitsiringos Story we spoke about the Lingering Factor, and its causes and effects. In Part 2, Dr. Tsitsiringos examines the state of the shipping industry, and his projections for the next ten years. One should remember his predictions for the current decade were surprisingly correct, even predicting the current situation in Greece, as shipping’s former world headquarters. For a point of reference, this interview was made in Athens, Greece on August 28th, 2010.

Hardware Basics of a Computer

Buying a computer is a tough choice if you want performance for your PC. Now how does hardware actually impact on the performance, and what choices does one have while selecting a proper hardware for a computer.

The first and the most basic part of the computer is the CPU or the processor to be used. The processor is the heart of any computing machine. Modern processors are much advanced and deliver much higher performance, than their predecessors. Modern processors efficiency increases mainly due to the no of cores. We have dual cores , quad core processors available. These cores function simultaneously, thus offering more performance than single core processors.

The speed of any processor depends on the clock frequency and the speed of the Front Side Bus. The clock frequency is measured in Ghz or Mhz for all processors. Now if you have a multi-core processor and a higher clock frequency, then naturally the performance of the processor is very high. Another term is FSB speed or the Front Side Bus speed. In simple terms, this is the speed with which the Processor communicates with the Memory.Consider a CPU with a FSB speed of 800 Mhz. For maximum performance it is recommended that the speed of the Memory installed on the motherboard is equal to the FSB Speed. This increases the speed of the processors capabilities.

Now that we have discussed about the processors and RAM, the next thing that is of importance is the motherboard. Motherboard is a circuit that enables communication of the processor with the peripheral devices, such as your sound card, graphics adapter, and hard disks. Motherboard selection depends on the type of the processor you are planning to buy. Different motherboards have compatibility with various processors. For getting the list of compatable motherboards for the processors you can go to the manufacturers website.

Modern motherboards have integrated audio and video controllers on them. This has increased complexity in their design but also has reduced the use of external sound cards, network controllers etc. The cost of motherboard vary according to their features that are supplied with the mother boards.
